The best time to trim your plant material is during the months of July and August. This time is ideal because the plan material has dropped its flowers and it is just before new buds are present. Hand prune your rhododendrons and similar plants instead of using an electric trimmer to prevent the leaves from being torn. All deciduous trees (i.e. birch, dogwood, black walnut) should be pruned in the winter months to prevent bleeding.
